Mutual Fund Sahe Hai!!!

I've a question related to investing in MF for long term - 20-25 years. People usually say stay invested for long period to earn more. I'm not able to understand one thing if a fund stops performing say after investing in it for 5-7 years and I made a switch to another fund then that SIP process will be broken so in that case is it going to affect MF return or we can keep monitoring our folios and make changes when needed? Please share your inputs @PerFinGuide Read More...

Hi, abhishek. This is a very good question. Many people have this confusion that how will long term investment work if we change something in between. Let us take an example. You start an SIP of 10000 Rs. per month. You want to continue for 20 years. However, after 5 years you see the fund is underperforming and you want to change it. So you change the fund and start an SIP in a new fund. Also, you switch the existing amount of the old fund to the new fund. So the 6 lakh rs, you have invested till now, which at a return of  , let's assume 10% in 5 years, has become 7.65 lakhs. So now your investment is that 7.65 lakhs and the 10000 Rs of SIP in the new fund. You will get return on both, the 7.65 lakhs and the 10K SIP. So the process does not break, only the funds change. Also, most important thing is to stay invested, more than returns, the time you have stayed invested matters. Hope I am able to solve the query somewhat. Read More...

If it is for 3 years only, then I would suggest that he invest in debt fund. At this age, in short term he should not invest in equity funds at all. However, if he can go till 5 years. then around 30%-40% can be invested in a large cap fund with remaining being in a low duration debt fund. Read More...
